This year the annual VET in Schools Excellence Awards were conducted to comply with COVID restrictions so that we could still celebrate the outstanding achievements of Vocational Education & Training (VET) students within our regional schools. Around 600 secondary school students are enrolled in VET subjects and School Based Apprenticeships in our region this year.
Thirty-eight students were nominated for the Awards by their VET teachers and trainers. Completion of a work placement in the relevant industry is normally a pre-requisite for nomination but this requirement was waived, as this year placements were frequently not possible. Nominated students submitted their resume and were interviewed on line by a panel of judges. The process is good preparation for entering the workforce. On line learning proved to be very good preparation for the interviews.
The three judges enjoyed the experience and had high praise for the finalists.
Brendon Hawken said “I believe that the VET program improves the education, training as well as employment opportunities, and it offers a transition to other pathways, be it university, employment or other, to achieve outcomes for the young people in our region.”
Michael Pratt said “I love to hear how these incredibly motivated, focussed and committed young people are forging their own careers in their chosen fields of study. It is obvious that they enjoy their learning, their involvement in a workplace and the positive outcomes and recognition that they receive.”
Jess Ibbeson, Community Programs Coordinator, Campaspe Shire Council said “ It was wonderful to see the tremendous value of work that local young people are accomplishing, and to also hear the huge amount of passion that drives them to success in their areas of interest.”
The judges acknowledged the flexibility of the students and schools to adapt to the demands during the judging interviews, particularly juggling various technology platforms and coping with poor internet reception.
