On Wednesday 20 November , 65 Year 8 students from Rochester embarked on a Careers Exploration Day, visiting a wide range of local businesses across the town and its surrounding areas. The event, designed to provide students with real-world insights into various careers, split the group into four teams. Two groups explored the CBD on foot, while the other two visited outlying businesses, including Acocks Farm.
Throughout the day, students gained valuable hands-on experience in a variety of industries. At the Rochester Motel, students learned how to make beds, while the team at Rochester Mitre 10 demonstrated the vast array of products and services available at the hardware store. At the Rochester Dental Clinic, students crafted their own mouthguards, offering a glimpse into dental health careers.
Other notable visits included Campaspe Early Learning, where students got creative with play dough, and the Rochester Police Station, where they had the chance to try on full police uniforms, minus the handgun, of course. Ray White Rochester provided a deep dive into the property market, sharing their expertise in helping families with major life purchases. Rochester Community House highlighted the benefits of volunteering within the community.
The diverse experience continued with Acocks Farm, where students saw firsthand the variety of tasks involved in farm life. Other local businesses such as the Lockington, Elmore, Rochester Community Bank, Capelli & Co., and Temptation Living and Landscapes also welcomed students, giving them a broader perspective on the careers available in their community.
From retail and hospitality to agriculture and engineering, the Careers Exploration Day offered Rochester Year 8 students an exciting opportunity to learn about the local workforce and the many paths available to them in the future.
