Recognising the importance of helping students explore opportunities beyond the classroom, the Careers Team at Rochester Secondary College once again partnered with CCLLEN to deliver an inspiring Industry Tour for the Year 8 cohort.
This year, 67 students and six teachers ventured into the heart of Rochester and surrounding areas to gain firsthand insight into the world of work. CCLLEN coordinated with over 20 local businesses, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. While some businesses couldn’t participate this time, many expressed keen interest in joining future tours.
Students experienced a diverse range of industries, including retail, agriculture and environmental services, medical, hospitality, early childhood education, automotive, and hair and beauty. Each student received a “Passport” listing the businesses they would visit, with space to jot down answers to questions like “What did you learn?” and “Does this business offer work experience?”—as well as noting anything that sparked their interest.
The cohort split into four groups: two explored businesses on foot, while two travelled by bus to outlying locations. Across the morning, each group visited six different industries, immersing themselves in real-world environments and gaining valuable insights.
After the visits, students regrouped to share observations and learnings. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with highlights including welding workshops, the dental clinic, playdough-making, and Ag Warehouse. Suggestions for next year? Extend the tour to a full day and include even more businesses!
