Shepparton, 11 September 2023

In a thrilling culmination of culinary excellence, the Murray River Culinary Challenge Grand Final witnessed intense competition as teams from Echuca College, Notre Dame College, and St. Mary Mackillop College battled it out at the GO TAFE Shepparton campus. Coordinated by three LLENs (Local Learning and Employment Networks) across their respective regions — Campaspe Cohuna LLEN, Goulburn Murray LLEN, and Murray Mallee LLEN — the event showcased the talents of paired chefs.

The culinary showdown required each team to prepare, cook, and present a sophisticated 3-course menu consisting of a smoked trout salad, herb-crusted lamb rack, and a delectable chocolate fondant cake. The clock was ticking, with each team allocated a tight 2.5 hours to impress the discerning judging panel.

Teams arrived in well-coordinated uniforms with meticulously planned work flow strategies. The judging criteria focused on consistency, flavor, and creative presentation, challenging the young chefs to demonstrate their culinary prowess.

Amidst the fierce competition, the home team, led by Kate Durrant and Lochie Patience from Echuca College, emerged victorious. Their exceptional skills and teamwork secured them the coveted Murray River Culinary Challenge trophy, crafted from a piece of highly polished red gum sourced from the Koondrook forest. This prestigious trophy now proudly resides with the reigning champions at Echuca College.

The judging panel, comprised of industry experts George Santos from Moama Bowling Club, Rebecca Hart from Boo’s Place Café & Provedore, and Kristofer Bech Howley from Milestone Café & Bistro, commended the students for their passion and commitment to the hospitality industry. Their expertise and discerning palates played a crucial role in determining the winners of this culinary spectacle.

A special note of gratitude was extended to the long-term sponsor, Moama Bowling Club, for their continued generosity and support of the Murray River Culinary Challenge in the Campaspe region. The event showcased not only the culinary talents of the students but also the strong partnerships between educational institutions, industry professionals, and sponsors working together to foster the next generation of culinary experts.

As the Murray River Culinary Challenge concludes its grand final, the culinary world eagerly awaits the continued growth and success of these aspiring chefs who are set to make their mark in the vibrant and competitive hospitality industry.
