The TAC L2P Driver Program, renowned for its volunteer mentors assisting disadvantaged 16 to 21-year-old learner drivers in obtaining their crucial 120 hours of driving experience, is not just a driving program—it's an extraordinary platform for personal growth and life-changing experiences.
Terry James, a seasoned mentor within the program, was paired with Jack Synott-Gass. As they accumulated driving hours together, a strong bond formed between them. Spending 120 hours in close quarters fosters profound conversations, enabling a young man with limited life experience to open up to a mentor with a wealth of wisdom.
Towards the end of their journey, the topic of "what's next?" arose. Jack expressed his desire to work in the automotive industry but was uncertain about the path to pursue. Leveraging his expertise in writing applications, Terry recognized the requirements and kindly offered his assistance.
During their next drive, Terry proposed the idea of visiting various workplaces in Echuca and personally delivering Jack's resume. Echuca Toyota was one of the early stops on their list, and to their surprise, not only did the dealership accept Jack's resume, but they also requested a brief meeting. The outcome was life-altering—Jack secured an apprenticeship and never looked back.
While Echuca Toyota and the Moama Bowling Club are prominent sponsors of the Echuca L2P car, John and Emma Merritt, the owners of Echuca Toyota, never anticipated gaining an employee through their support. For Jack, enrolling in the L2P program marked a turning point, providing him with a driver's license, employment, and the belief that someone beyond his family had faith in his abilities. Terry, filled with pride, remains in contact with Jack, observing his progress. The hours Terry dedicated to Jack's development have been more than reciprocated.
This heartwarming success story, made possible by the support of Echuca Toyota, particularly John and Emma Merritt, underscores the vital role local businesses play in our community.
Without their contribution, this inspiring narrative would not have unfolded.
It is important to acknowledge that the program's mentors are all volunteers, and countless stories similar to Jack and Terry's demonstrate the profound impact they have.
When you spot the L2P cars navigating the streets of Echuca or Kyabram, remember that they represent more than just hours on the road.

Echuca Toyota has proudly been in partnership with the TAC L2P program for many years. The program supports young learner drivers who may not have access or opportunity to be able to achieve their 120 driving hours required to sit for their licence. It is an extremely important program for our community to be able to access. I never thought that we would end up with a new team member as a result of our ongoing support, it really proved why we support to help young people towards their future aspirations. We are thrilled to be able to assist Jack with his apprenticeship journey, he is very eager to learn and has settled in very quickly to his role here at the dealership. Thank you to Terry for mentoring Jack, not only did you assist in Jack being able to successfully obtain his licence, but you have also helped with his employment aspirations. With the bond that Terry and Jack have, it shows the program goes beyond the just driving side and I am sure you will both remain in each other’s lives for many years to come.
