Echuca Twin Rivers Specialists School Careers Week
Echuca Twin Rivers Specialists School students ventured out into the twin towns of Echuca Moama for a weeklong event with students visiting a different industry every day for approximately 90 minutes. The student groups rotated through a total of 4 industries.
Approximately 28 students from Years10/11/12 with 9 staff went in different directions every morning.
The Echuca West Woolworths is a few minutes walk from school; students were met by the store manager, Meg Savage. We all learnt how Woolworths stores work, their commitment to sustainability and the amazing blue tooth technology that keeps things like shelf price dockets updated. Aisle 7 was left a little messy overnight so the students could learn to "face up” products on the shelves.
Vivid works with adults who have an intellectual disability offering flexible support plans for individual needs. There are a number of Vivid sites around town offering different programs including supported employment. Students enjoyed car detailing, arts and craft, gardening and work crew and sorting donations of clothing and household goods.
Community Living and Respite Services has established two social enterprises, the Murray River Tea Rooms and Recyclability. Through these social enterprises is the promotion of inclusion of people with disability in the community and provide valuable opportunities resulting in a strong sense of accomplishment.
The Tea Rooms had students taking coffee orders, delivering and clearing cups & saucers to customers and learning to stack the dishwasher.
At Recyclability students learnt how the op shop was managed and what to do with donations
Students learnt they could gain skills, experience and confidence opening future employment opportunities.
Laundry Mates is another social enterprise where individuals can learn the skills in the laundry industry. Contracts are gained from local motels, Air B & B's, restaurants, hairdressers and resorts. This is a vibrant business. The students had great fun with music pumping while they helped fold and bag clean towels for a contract.
Feedback from local businesses has been positive, with students asking some great questions and being quite engaged with the activities.
It has been a busy and rewarding week for students, staff and our local businesses, opening ideas and opportunities for all involved.
