Indigenous perspectives are one of three ‘cross-curriculum dimensions’ in the new national curriculum.
Why should students learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, cultures and perspectives at school?
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, cultures and perspectives teach Australian children about their country’s heritage and original inhabitants as well as the ongoing impact of colonisation and how we have come to be the society we are today. Aboriginal peoples are the oldest continuing culture in the world, have occupied this continent for over 40,000 years & are an important part of our national identity.
The flag symbolises Aboriginal Identity. Yellow represents the sun (giver of life) and yellow ochre. Red represents the red earth (the relationship to the land) and the red ochre used in ceremonies. Black represents the Aboriginal people.
