Transitions and Pathways Network Forum

Wednesday December 14th

Coriander Functions, Echuca

Highlights of the work of the CCLLEN and future plans were presented at this forum attended by representatives from regional schools and other organisations.

Some of the highlights mentioned were the work of the Workplace Learning Coordinator (WLC) in increasing the number of quality workplacements available to local students. Of particular interest was the database of employers willing to take on students on workplacements that the WLC is setting up. Other things of particular interest included CCLLEN’s facilitation of the Campaspe Network of Youth Services, The Murray River Culinary Challenge, the VETiS Awards and the LLEN’s role in the Kyabram and Gannawarra Youth Partnerships projects.

Participants completed a workshop where they had valuable input into the CCLLEN’s Strategic Plan Revision. The LLEN really values and endeavours to act upon feedback from its stakeholder groups.

Graeme Lynas from Loddon Mallee DEECD Region gave an update on departmental processes for 2012. Amanda Hubber, Youth Partnerships Project Officer presented the background and detail on the very exciting Kyabram Youth Partnerships initiative.

There was much sharing of knowledge of innovative programs and practices in vocational education. In particular, Rushworth P-12’s Country Fire Authority program was discussed and our wonderful VETiS Student of the year Jesse Evans from St Joseph’s College spoke about their popular Allied Health Program.

All participants enjoyed a lovely celebratory lunch, using the opportunity to informally network.

VET Awards 2011

On Wednesday night we celebrated the outstanding achievements of Vocational Education & Training (VET) students within our regional schools at an Awards Night at the Moama Bowling Club. Around 600 secondary school students are enrolled in VET subjects in our region. Forty-five finalists were presented with certificates during the Awards ceremony, with winners announced in 19 categories.

Organised by the Campaspe Cohuna Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN), the night was a great success with more than 220 people attending. Students and their families, schools, host employers and sponsoring businesses were all invited to attend.

Students are nominated for the Awards by their VET teachers and trainers and must have completed a work placement in industry to be eligible. Host employers provide reports on individual student performance. Nominated students submit their resumes and attend an interview with a panel of judges. The process is good preparation for entering the workforce. The judges were impressed by the outstanding calibre of the candidates.

Anne Trickey, Executive Office of Campaspe Cohuna LLEN congratulated all involved, “The Awards Night is all about celebrating the achievements of young people and acknowledging the commitment and support of industry to provide authentic and quality work placements for our VET students.”

Introduction to Dyslexia Workshop

This workshop, facilitated by the CCLLEN, was held in the student lounge of the Echuca Campus of Bendigo TAFE on Wednesday evening October 26th, 2011. A large audience of teachers, parents and community members participated in author Liz Dunoon’s personal and authoritatively researched workshop that was full of practical advice. Liz, a mother to three children all with dyslexia, believes that well informed staff and parents are a child’s best chance for overcoming associated literacy and numeracy hurdles. Attendees left the workshop feeling educated, empowered and full of optimism for the future for a child or a student with dyslexia. Liz is the author of the book ‘Helping Children with Dyslexia’.
